I have traded in Wem since 1988 firstly in no8 Leek St; we originally sold fruit/veg and a small range of health foods. We then moved to no6 Leek St and used the extra space to introduce a salad bar selling homemade coleslaw/potato salad and a variety of pasta salads. This became very popular and it was obvious to me that even larger premises would be necessary. This need made the purchase of 31 High St (the old Readers shoe shop) an important next step in allowing us to develop the range of food we offer. The purchase of the shop was simple compared to the total renovation which was required, to both the shop and the adjoining ball room; this would not have been possible without grant aid from NSDC and sympathetic planners. One advantage was that the property backed onto a warehouse we already used so it linked in quite easily. Once the renovations were complete the aim was to sell fruit and veg in one side of the shop and the salad/ sandwich bar and a hot food counter on the other. All the sandwiches are made to order from an extensive range of cooked meats, cheese and salads, The hot food is made fresh daily on the premises, roast meat veg and potatoes are available every day with a variety of other dishes changing daily with cauliflower cheese, hot pasta bake, shepherds pie, curry and rice, chilli, hot pot on the menu. Homemade soup and baked potatoes are always available. From 7-11am every day we sell bacon, egg, sausage and mushroom sandwiches and rolls. We now also have a butchers department where we produce our own sausage and cure a small amount of bacon, our most recent addition has been a frozen food section offering loose pastries, veg, fish and fruit. The majority of our fruit and veg is bought direct from Manchester Wholesale Market which we visit 6 days a week, however we do source our potatoes and some veg locally. We use local suppliers of cheese and chicken and our bacon comes from Corwen, the meat is supplied by a wholesaler in Chester. We also have a busy wholesale department supplying fruit /veg, prep veg, meat, dairy produce and a small range of dried goods to local pubs/hotels/restaurants and schools. We now employ 16 full/part time staff and business is up 60% in the last 3 years and continues to grow. This is because of the quality of what we sell and the service we give to our customers, we open at 7am 6 days a week. I am very lucky that my staff are friendly, and they understand that the customer comes first, my business would be impossible without them. We always look for ways to improve service and the majority of the staff have completed either basic or intermediate food hygiene courses and have just completed NVQ LEVEL 1AND 2 in food and drink in association with North Shropshire College at Walford. We strive for customer satisfaction and always do our best. Paul Chesters Chesters Choice
